The Survival Kit by Donna FreitasWhen Rose’s mom dies, she leaves behind a brown paper bag labeled Rose’s Survival Kit. Inside the bag, Rose finds an iPod, with a to-be-determined playlist; a picture of peonies, for growing; a crystal heart, for loving; a paper star, for making a wish; and a paper kite, for letting go.
As Rose ponders the meaning of each item, she finds herself returning again and again to an unexpected source of comfort. Will is her family’s gardener, the school hockey star, and the only person who really understands what she’s going through. Can loss lead to love?

What is an emergency comfort kit?
For my church, I teach a group of Young Women between the ages of 12 and Each Wednesday night we get together for an activity. Last night I was in charge of planning our activity. Instead of creating the mirrors, etc. First, instead of the snack container, I used a sliding pencil case. I created the labels with my Silhouette machine. I assembled the vinyl labels for the girls ahead of time, so all they needed to do was adhere to the label to the front and then decorate with stickers.
And she looked it too. It was then that I realized just how hard it must be to be a teacher. But to have a classroom full of eager and excited children, especially during those first few days and weeks of school…. Now I imagine that throughout the course of a day teachers just might need a little pick me up. I found this adorable red tin in the dollar spot at Target and picked up some fun sized chocolate bars to put inside.
This school year many parents, including me, have surprising items on their school supply lists: emergency kits. Small bags of emergency supplies, referred to as emergency bags, comfort bags or kits, are increasingly popular with the back-to-school crowd. Some parents rely on school district- approved supply lists to build bags for their kids, while others purchase pre-made. School supply lists were released last week in my hometown. Jenna, a friend who recently moved here from Tennessee, called me to ask why emergency kits were included on the list.
