The 1-Page Marketing Plan

I recently received this Marketing book in the post for free. I had been asked nicely in advance if I would review it. I like reading business books so I agreed no fee involved. The book is called The 1-Page Marketing Plan. It is written by Allan Dib from Australia and it is a very worthwhile read. In the conclusion, Allan states that no one knows how good your products or services are until after the sale. Before they buy, they only know how good your marketing is.

Developing a marketing plan is nothing more than setting goals and making a to-do list that will get you there. The process of planning something is time-consuming and exhaustive, but it is an absolute necessity if you want to be successful. So how do we reconcile our need to succeed with our propensity for procrastination? In addition to the marketing plan example, the right marketing strategy template will a long way to simplify the process. But before you get started, you have re-frame how you look at planning. Sounds like a party to me.

Never underestimate the power of brevity. Marketing plans can run for pages, and sometimes they should. But for many situations a one-page marketing is fine, if not even better than a longer plan. A one-page marketing plan forces you to coalesce your thoughts into one short, succinct document. Like the one-page business plan, the single-sheet marketing plan encourages you to focus on what really matters.

Since I first created the One Page Marketing Plan template, many people have asked me to provide a marketing plan example so they can see it in action. So here it is! The One Page Marketing Plan takes the core components of an effective marketing plan and condenses them onto a single page.

The benefits of planning are well understood in theory, but in practice few of us carry this through into our businesses effectively. The health warning is that, although the output may appear simple, creating a one-page plan will still involve a fair degree of hard work and intellectual effort! The fact is that, although you may be able to put your conclusions and actions succinctly into one page, the real hard work in planning is in the process. You will undoubtedly know a lot about your own market and products, but you need to sort that knowledge, filter it, fill in the gaps and then draw appropriate conclusions in order to have a sound basis for your planning. Ultimately your one-page plan will cover all the basic building blocks of analysis and planning, including dependencies and resources:. Most importantly it then identifies what is going to be done, by who and when across the marketing mix: product, price, place promotion the 4ps. We're writing a series of blogs that will tackle each of these sections in turn, looking at some tools that will help in analysis or checking gut instinct.

Download the marketing plan template. While she has her own website, most of her sales come from the craft marketplace Etsy. Thus she turned to using this simple marketing plan as a means to rethink how she marketed herself. For a business owner, confusion and procrastination often work hand-in-hand to keep you from making needed changes. For Kerry, for example, before working on the marketing plan she was having trouble figuring out next steps for the business. The mere process of writing the marketing plan helped her put down on paper what she already knew and clarify the steps she needed to take next. Plus she came away from the process full of ideas, empowered, and energized to get to work.
