Stevenson Under the Palm Trees by Alberto Manguel

Stevenson Under the Palm Trees is a vivid novella with Robert Louis Stevenson at its centre. Drawing on works produced by Stevenson at the end of his life, Manguel weaves a story about his life on Samoa, a philosophical investigation into morality, storytelling and reality. Manguels story is filled with the echoes of Stevensons work, the most obvious parallel to be drawn being that between the fictional Stevensons relationship with Mr Baker, and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The book follows Stevenson as his life crumbles, reality blurring with fiction, dream and fantasy as he acts in ways he doesnt believe himself.

A constantly recurring idea in the text is that telling a story creates a truth, and this is the overall effect of this piece of writing: a fictional biography that becomes a reality of sorts. Stevenson Under the Palm Trees is a beautifully crafted work that provokes a dialogue about truth, reality and personal responsibility.

I enjoyed this book very much and find it hard to summarise exactly why; there are reams that could be written about it and much to analyse. But its also immensely readable and very short, so even if your preferred reading is non-analytical, Id highly recommend it.

Famous Quotes About Racism

Capitalism knows only one color: that color is green; all else is necessarily subservient to it, hence, race, gender and ethnicity cannot be considered within it. Do not ghettoize society by putting people into legal categories of gender, race, ethnicity, language, or other such characteristics. Choose your friends and mates, not by the money in their bank account, creed, ethnicity, or color; instead, choose character, actions, heart, and soul. When we bleed, we bleed the same color.

That said, interracial dating does offer some interesting opportunities to learn about different cultures, and when you date someone of a different ethnicity, you get the pleasure of learning more about their family background and cultural upbringing. And in turn, you can share your own cultural upbringing with them and then get all giddy when you see that they're actually interested. If you want to feel inspired about interracial dating, then continue reading below for a few of our favorite quotes that will remind you of just how progressive our views on dating have become over the past decades. It's just one human being marrying another human being or one human being living around and with another human being. August 13, Quotes. Though there has been much progress, there is still much work to do. So, I thought to share a few quotes on racism, bigotry, and intolerance in the hopes that it would inspire us all to reflect and move forward.

Share funny, witty or inspiring quotes. Stop dividing people into 'us' and 'them'. You decide. Even as the world changes and grows, sadly, racism is here to stay. People aren't born racist; it's not in our genes.

  1. In spite of the huge diversity in Malaysia in terms of religion, culture, race, ethnicity and so forth, we've really gone very far in developing this country.
