Such an Inspiring biography! Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She was raised in a small farming community with almost nothing. Oprah’s father, Vernon, was working at a military camp trying to put food on the table while Oprah’s mother Vernita, worked double shifts to help contribute. Oprah would usually hang around with her grandmother before she could attend school. Everyone new Oprah around town, she was a great speaker and acted in many of the town churches. A few years had past and Vernita decides to move up to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she got a job that paid better. Oprah moved in with her and leaving her father he went off and got married and moved to Nashville. By this point Oprah’s mother had another child, Oprah really started having a troubled adolescence. One terrible night one of her cousins came to baby-sit them, Oprah was sexually abused and raped. She kept this as a secret for many years because she was so ashamed. Vernita new Oprah wasn’t fitting in well here and decides to send her off with her father. She started getting good grades, many friends, and became very popular. She signed up for all the public speaking classes since that’s what she loved. She entered Tennessee State University in 1971 and began working in radio and television broadcasting in Nashville. In 1976, Oprah Winfrey moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she hosted the TV chat show People Are Talking. The show became a hit and Winfrey stayed with it for eight years. Everything started working out for Oprah, she was making 200,000 dollars a year but she wanted more! Winfrey launched the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1986 as a nationally syndicated program. With its placement on 120 channels and an audience of 10 million people, the show grossed $125 million by the end of its first year. Oprah just ended her Show in 2011 and was known to be the second most powerful woman on earth today with an incredible net worth of 2.3 billion U.S dollars.
This biography was outstanding. Oprah showed a great amount of passion for what she loved and it definitely paid off. The story really hits me, to see someone grow up with nothing, sharing one bed with three other kids, and being abused to becoming the second richest and most powerful woman on earth is just amazing. The author really has a passion for Oprah and explains all the significant events that passed in her life, which I admired.
I would definitely recommend this book to someone who enjoys reading about success. It can definitely be inspiring to any person that would want to become a T.V host, or something to do with net working channels. This book really gives you the feeling that what ever you love to do, just do it! Don’t let anyone hold you back, you should just live your dream.
