War Horse is a children's novel by English author Michael Morpurgo. The story recounts the experiences of Joey, a horse purchased by the Army for service in World War I France and the attempts of young Albert, his previous owner, to bring him safely home. It formed the basis of both an award winning play and an acclaimed film adaptation by Steven Spielberg. After meeting a World War I veteran, Wilfred Ellis, who drank in his local pub at Iddesleigh and who had been in the Devon Yeomanry working with horses, Morpurgo began to think of telling the story of the universal suffering of the Great War through a horse's viewpoint, but was unsure that he could do it. With his wife, Morpurgo had founded Farms for City Children , a charity where inner city children live and work on rural farms for a week. I came in the last evening into the yard behind this big Victorian house where they all live, and there he was, Billy, standing in his slippers by the stable door and the lantern above his head, talking. Talking, talking, talking, to the horse.
Joey's earliest memory is of being taken to the town marketplace with his mother while an auction that he did not fully understand took place around him. Two men bid feverishly against each other until the auctioneer brings down his hammer and Joey is led away. He has never been apart from his mother before, and he starts crying for her, hearing her cries for him becoming fainter as he is taken farther away. Joey's new home is a farm, with plenty of land and a comfortable stable where he is given a stall next to a placid, motherly horse called Zoey. He likes her very much but dislikes the farmer who has purchased him.
