Fairy tales have been read and show on television for years. The classic stories have become so familiar to society that many authors use these folktales in their novels. It might not have all of the components of the original but it contains similar elements. With each new piece of literature it adds a sense of familiarity. Many readers enjoy this when it is accompanied with strangeness. Having a story pertain to a fairy tale, allows readers to be able to rely on their previous knowledge to make sense of the new and unfamiliar text.

Foster then explains that using these types of literature as references is crucial because it eliminates the possibility of confusion over characters. It is also possible to use the whole idea of a previous piece of literature and modernize it in a way that the moral is the same but the characters and plot are different. Lastly, he states that irony rarely causes confusion and typically gets the point across to the reader. One example in which a writer has used one, or more, of the said literary references, is Things Fall Apart. In the story of "The Phantom of the Opera" the main character, the Phantom, has a facial deformity and lives his life in hiding. This is until he meets a young girl, Christine, who he falls in love with, but spends his time trying to get her to not see his deformity. This story is parallel to the story of "Beauty and the Beast". The beast in this story doesn't have a normal appearance and is hiding until he sees a young girl.
